The Primordials

Description

In the beginning, there was Kaos, an infinite void without beginning or ending. From that void came the Primordials...

Presenting the sequel to my depiction of the twelve original Titans - the Primordials, forces of nature and aspects of our world, and predecessors of the Titans. This is only them at a younger age, of course - they'll be getting much, much bigger as they get older.
I opted whilst drawing them to make them much more abstract in form than the Titans, so that the latter would seem positively human in comparison. For some, such as Gaea and Eros, the forms came quickly and easily, whilst others like Chronus and Ouranus took a lot of thought to get right.

Anyway, top row, left to right:

Erebus and Nyx: the personifications of darkness and night respectively

Aether and Hemera: the personifications of light and day respectively, children of Nyx and Erebus

Ananke: the personification of destiny, inevitability and necessity, and according to some stories the mother of the Fates; the spindle is her main symbol

Chronus: the personification of time, not to be confused with the Titan Kronus; of all the Primordials, this one was the most annoying - first he was a weird snake creature with three faces, then he was a floating ruined city, then he was a giant infinity sign, then he was an hourglass, and finally I took inspiration from the water clock that came before the hourglass and this is the result

Eros: the personification of lust and procreation

And bottom row, left to right:

Hydros: the personification of the primordial waters

Thesis: the personification of creation

Pontus and Thalassa: personifications of the sea, and the former is a child of Gaea

The Nesoi: the various islands, children of Gaea

Gaea: the personification of the earth, the original mother goddess, parent of the seas, the mountains, the Titans, the giants etc; a body of smooth wind-eroded rock was the first idea that came to me

Ouranus: the personification of the heavens; in some classical Greek art he's depicted holding a giant ring that has the signs of the zodiac on it, and that led to the assortment of same zodiac signs hovering in front of a fragment of sky; I'm still not too happy with how his colours came out

The Ourea: the mountains themselves, children of Gaea

Tartarus: the personification of the oldest, darkest and nastiest part of the Underworld
